A bathroom adaptation and ramp installation has given a Boston woman new-found freedom and independence.

Rose Baigent had not been able to use her mobility scooter in 12 months.

The step that sits directly outside the front door held Rose captive and unable to leave her home due to a series of mobility issues.

After we assessed Rose’s home and living conditions, it was clear to see the obstacles she faces daily. Rose explained: “I can’t walk about on my own. I am supported by a walker, chair or my mobility scooter. But I haven’t been able to use my mobility scooter for a year.

“I couldn’t use the bathroom because there was a step to get into the shower. I found it difficult to lift my legs over the step. So, I couldn’t get a shower until my carer came to help me every Friday.”

With the step to the door and shower proving to be a challenge for Rose, our trusted tradespeople knew exactly what adaptations would improve her quality of life.

  • The outside step was removed and replaced with a ramp.
  • A wide and accessible outside ramp was installed to help her enter and exit her home
  • The step in the bathroom was removed and adapted to be one level
  • The front door was dropped to reach the floor

All of these home adaptations have increased the accessibility of her home and helped Rose to regain her independence and freedom.

Describing the transformation, Rose said: “The wet room is bloody lovely. I can now go in with my wheelchair when I want and use the shower when I feel like.

 “It was worth the wait.

“I can get out now and it’s wonderful. Even if it is just to the shops, it’s better than looking at these four walls.”

“You wouldn’t believe how much easier it is now.

“The engineers were excellent. They were so lovely and caring.”
