Improving your home

We carry out a cyclical planned works programme to ensure our homes are up to standard.

However, we recognise you may want to improve your home or make some alterations. Apart from decorating, you may need to seek our permission in line with the terms of your agreement with us. Examples of alterations include:

  • Installing a shower
  • Fitting a new kitchen or bathroom
  • Building a conservatory
  • Laying a patio
  • Adding or moving electrical points
  • Replacing doors
  • Changes to the heating system

Before you make any changes, please download, complete and send in the application form linked at the bottom of this page. Please give as much details as you can of the changes you wish to make including drawings and measurements where possible. 

We can then consider your application and we may need to come out to visit you. We can then give you permission or tell you why we can’t agree your request.

Unfortunately, we can’t agree any requests if you owe us any money for rent or any other debt with us. Customers on a starter or probationary affordable tenancy will also not be given permission to carry out an improvement or alteration. Remember, you may also need building regulation approval and / or planning permission from your local council before making your requested change. We can usually advise you if this is the case. 

If we agree the changes you want to make, part of our consent is conditional on you using competent professionals to make the changes. You will need to follow the relevant trade rules and provide us with certification to show that the work undertaken complies with any legislation or regulation. For example, you must use a Gas Safe registered contractor for gas work and an approved electrician must do all electrical work. 

Any permission agreed may also be conditional on us visiting to inspect the work after it is finished to ensure it meets our standards and we have been provided with copies of all relevant certificates. 

If you make any alterations, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing the improvements.

If you decide to leave your Acis home, we expect you to leave it in good condition. If there are any repairs related to an improvement you’ve done, you will need to arrange for these to be carried out. You may possibly need to return the property to its original state so you may need to remove or alter your improvement. We usually visit before you end your tenancy with us so we can advise you in more detail then.

Home improvement request form

All requests to make home improvements or alterations will be at the customer’s own expense. Work  should not start until written permission has been received from Acis.
