Calling all job hunters!

Find out how to use different platforms to aid in your hunt for work.

First of all, make sure you have a strong CV and cover note that is personalised to the role you’re applying for.

  • Apply for jobs. This is easier said than done but scan for jobs online on platforms such as Indeed, Reed or Monster. Filter or search various keywords to make sure you’re applying for the job that’s right for you.
  • Do more. Interviewers receive many online job applications and yours may get lost on the way. So, don’t rely on just applying online. Contact agencies that specialise in the industry you want to work in. This may mean attending an interview with the agency to ensure that you’re the right candidate for their clients, but it’s just another way to practice and make contacts.
  • Message people directly. If you know where you would like to work, then go that one step further. Message people that are already in the industry and ask for a chat. Explain why you want to speak with them. Even if it’s not a success, it shows that you’re interested and willing to go the extra mile.
  • Search on LinkedIn. Create a LinkedIn profile and follow people/companies in the industry you’re applying for. Message them to see if they have any work opportunities available and stay on the look out to see if they post about any job openings. It may also be a good idea to approach new graduates or newly recruited people to ask them for advice and tips. Don’t forget to switch on ‘job alerts’ to be notified and ‘career interests’ to let employers know you’re looking for work.
