An elderly customer was saved by a team from Acis during a routine welfare check after they discovered he’d collapsed in his home.
The man, in his 70s, fell ill while trying to answer the door and collapsed as Acis Group’s housing and health and safety teams were visiting customers in Gainsborough.
Leigh Paddon and Ann Wynn, from the Health and Safety team, and Chloe Cook, from the Safer Communities team, darted into action after finding the tenant.
They called emergency services immediately then stayed with him to provide support. They also realised he was malnourished and bought him hot food and other essentials.
Leigh said: “This situation shows just how important it is to trust your instincts and take action. Sometimes when someone says they’re ‘alright’, they’re anything but – this is why we carry out welfare checks on some of our more vulnerable tenants and thank goodness we do.
“I’m so proud to work for an organisation that genuinely cares and wants to make a difference to our customers. On this occasion, the team went above and beyond to help and make sure this elderly gentleman got the support he needs.”
The team noted that the tenant, who lives alone with no immediate family, had deteriorated significantly since their last welfare check and felt he was no longer able to live safely on his own.
He has now been referred to health and social care professionals.
Chloe said: “When difficult situations like this presents themselves to us whilst visiting a vulnerable tenant, we liase with different partners to ensure the right support is put in place to help the tenant as much as we can.”
The way the team responded reflects The Acis Way – a set of principles which guides the behaviours of Acis Group teams.
Ann added: “I think this also underlines a wider issue facing communities that vulnerable people can often remain hidden in plain sight. Those living alone, without strong support networks, may struggle to access help - or may be reluctant to ask for it at all.”
The incident has prompted renewed emphasis on safeguarding awareness across the organisation, as well as the continued importance of compassion, teamwork and accountability in day-to-day roles.
