About 50 tonnes of rubbish have been tidied from the streets, houses and gardens of Sheffield through a community initiative.

Residents of the Lower Manor and Woodthorpe estates came in their droves in two days in May to fill large skips of unwanted waste to be taken to recycling centres.

The Love Your Street initiative, which also saw groups of volunteers litter picking, was run by social housing provider Acis, which owns and manages around 1,100 properties in the city. It was supported by Glendale grounds maintenance, Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Police.

Derek Squires, of Lower Manor, said: “I love my street. The biggest part of it is keeping the area nice and clean. We need to do more of this type of thing.”

Marie Fogg, of Woodthorpe, said: “Things like this are a great idea. Sometimes it’s the only way to keep your area tidy. It’s much appreciated.”

Tony Batty, of Woodthorpe, said: “I love my street as it’s nice and quiet. Initiatives like this are good as it brings the community together – but we might need bigger skips.”

Claire Tunstall, Customer Engagement Coordinator at Acis, said: “Our Love Your Street initiatives are all about proving our commitment to the areas in which we work, ensuring our customers have communities they can be proud of. We’ve got a lot more projects in the pipeline to continue our work across the towns, cities and villages we serve.”
