A Lincolnshire man has overcome self-esteem barriers thanks to our engaging sign language course.

John Bateman has recently attended the sign language course at Riverside Training. The course is one of many courses we run aimed at helping people to realise their full potential - thanks to funding from Lincolnshire County Council.

At first John was very reluctant to talk and displayed very low self-esteem. But after two sessions he has already shown signs of great progress.

The course not only aims to give learners an understanding of sign language, it also includes a focus on deaf awareness and how to include deaf people in social situations and conversations.

Before attending the course John had no sign language skills but he has enjoyed gaining confidence learning a new skill. When it came to learning specific signs, for example numbers and days of the week, John came to life. Through his own determination and with the support and understanding of our committed tutors he overcame his own learning barriers.

After seeing John’s confidence grow tutor Tracey Burbanks said: “He has become a happy, confident learner and is now able to hold a conversation in sign language with me.

“He even had the confidence to demonstrate what he’d learned with other tutors who popped in.

“It was great to see that after the end of his last session he left with a great big smile on his face.”
